Newcomers often need to decide quickly between importing, buying locally and using temporary transport. Do not assume registration, insurance or finance eligibility from someone else's situation. Ship your car or buy locally?
For importing, obtain current carrier and customs-broker quotes. The official moving-goods brochure can exempt one vehicle per household when all conditions are met, including at least 12 months of continuous ownership and use immediately before shipment and declaration within six months after transferring normal residence. The brochure describes the exemption as covering import taxes including turnover tax. If the exemption does not apply, have Customs classify the exact vehicle and calculate taxes in writing. Buying locally means no shipping wait, no customs procedure, no transport-damage risk, and you can test-drive before paying, usually the simpler route unless the moving-goods exemption clearly applies. Get a feel for local asking prices on Merkado.

The newcomer paperwork
Mandatory for registering or transferring any vehicle. Apply at the ; if you are already registered there, staff can look up your existing number.
Buy and transfer. The UOVV page lists a sédula or driving licence for the buyer. If you do not hold those documents, confirm accepted identification before paying. Follow the ownership transfer guide.

Insurance. WA (third-party liability) is the minimum coverage level; the insurer confirms acceptance and required documents.

Bring your Dutch no-claim history
If you are coming from the Netherlands, request a BM-verklaring (bonus-malus certificate) before cancelling your policy. Inter-Assure states that it can use Dutch Roy-data information. Financing without local banking history
Banks assess income, debts, status, documents and the vehicle under their own policies. Ask lenders for prequalification before relying on finance, and keep a cash, rental or temporary-transport alternative. The financing guide compares official product pages and documents.
What expats often get wrong
Assuming European specs. Cars here come from the US, Japan, Europe and Asia; verify the actual spec (odometer units, safety equipment, steering side) before buying.
Underestimating condition. Inspect paint, corrosion, rubber seals, battery, cooling and AC rather than judging on age alone. Use the inspection checklist.
Trusting the government keuring as a condition check. The official page does not publish a component checklist. Treat the card as an official result, not a mechanical warranty, and add an independent inspection.
Not saving the claims number. ENNIA's current accident page directs drivers to Forensys (9233; +5999 461-3282 from abroad). Save it and follow your own insurer's reporting instructions.
